Small business owners seeing effect of paid parking in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Paid parking was introduced in Wichita this year, and as Christmas approaches and the holiday shopping season rolls on, some downtown shop owners aren’t exactly happy with the effects that it has had on their business.

“The off-months like August, September, you know, have been about the same, you know, we didn’t get the big holiday boom that we normally get,” said Brian “Bam” Hunter, co-owner of Wizard’s Alley.

Wizard’s Alley, a game shop in Wichita, moved downtown two years ago. Hunter says at that time, parking near his business was free.

“Originally, people complained about going downtown, and now people not only complain about going downtown, but paying for parking downtown,” said Hunter.

He says since the summer months, he has continued to hear from customers who say paying for parking is an inconvenience.

“I have people that come in and the first thing, instead of greeting them and having a conversation, welcoming them into my shop, I have to diffuse them complaining about paying for parking down here,” said Hunter.

Another business owner we spoke with said sometimes people use her parking lot just to avoid paying, which she says takes away spots from her customers.

As for Hunter, he says while the holiday boost helps his business, he is already planning for what sales could look like afterwards.

“We’re doing okay cause it’s the holiday shopping season. What’s gonna happen in January and February, you know? Those low months when people just don’t wanna come downtown now because it’s paid parking,” said Hunter.
