On Sept. 27, members of the Fairview community gathered to not only remember those lost during Helene but to recall the resiliency the community had amid the storm’s aftermath.

A remembrance walk start at 9:27 a.m. – the time marking one year of when Helene hit Western North Carolina on Sept. 27.

The event was put on by the Garren Creek Foundation and Fairview Strong.

HELENE: A JOURNEY OF HOPE (RETURN TO FAIRVIEW)

The walk to remember was part of a larger event centered around the road to recovery and highlighting the resilience the Fairview Community – and all of Western North Carolina – has shown in the past year.

News 13 spoke with Julie Moller the president of the Garren Creek Foundation, of what kept them and the community going shortly after Helene struck.

“In those beginning days, we couldn’t have done it without each other. We really had to rely on each other. And what we realized very quickly was we needed a sense of community to be able to heal inside not just outside,” she said.

There was a community market also during today’s event to help celebrate local businesses.
