Dilworth MN (Valley News Live) -A vibrant floral shop in Dilworth’s Rail District has been steadily blooming for nearly a decade.
Stems of Joy owner Tanya Bergman first opened in Hawley, Minnesota before expanding to Dilworth.
“I realized there’s no flower shop in the Moorhead Dilworth Glyndon area so to me it was just a huge open untapped market,” Bergman said.
Bergman said shops like hers are the backbone of many communities. According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses make up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses. She encourages shoppers to remember the power they hold as consumers.
“When you choose, it’s a choice to where you want to spend your money right and we work really really hard for our money so it becomes a personal thing so when you choose to come into a business like this you’re actually supporting a dream but you’re actually investing in that business that can actually reinvest back into the community,” Bergman said.
Customer Bonnie Daily said she hopes her support can add to the growth and lifespan of local business.
“Well, I always like to support the local businesses and want them to keep growing and it’s a new district out here and I wanted to survive and keep growing here,” Daily said.
Bergman offered tips for those thinking of starting a business.
“Research go work it or get some place work it for a year give it a year because you’re not gonna really get the full experience unless you’re in something and mentor people love it when you come and ask people questions if they love what they do they’re not gonna have any problem sharing that knowledge,” Bergman said.
For current business owners and anyone dreaming of starting their own, Bergman offered one reminder.
“Steve Harvey says it perfectly. You will never know success unless you know failure,” Bergman said.
