GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Small Business Saturday brought dozens of people out shopping to support several local Greenville businesses.
Small Business Saturday is a Black Friday follow-up created by American Express in 2010 to encourage people to shop at small businesses.
Greenville is home to many local businesses, including the Bargain Boutique, Jenni K’s, and Simply Divine Oil and Wine, all of which participated in Small Business Saturday.
“Your neighborhood is only as strong as small businesses there, so get out, spend your money, and support your friends,” said Libby Holloway, a small business shopper.
Dozens of people could be seen out shopping, and they showed that supporting local businesses is important to them.
“If we don’t support our small businesses, then our community won’t survive, so it’s very important to make sure we are doing that,” said Rhonda Godwin, a small business shopper.
Many stores saw record-breaking customer counts.
“We sold more clothing than we have in three years,” said Linda Kuhn, a Bargain Boutique volunteer. “We’ve had a busier day today.”
Many stores gave the love right back, including the three WITN visited, with deals, 30% off, and beyond.
“Small Business Saturday is a great way for us to get back to our customers, so we’re running specials with three bottle purchases,” said Baird Whichard, a Simply Divine Oil and Wine employee.
“Shopping local means you’re helping local families, you’re helping our local economy grow,” said Whichard.
Many of the local businesses say they give back to the community in many different ways, especially because of the support they receive from their local customers.
“The economy is affecting everything, the metal prices are affecting everything, but the community is coming out and supporting us,” said Jenni K, Jenni K jewelry owner and founder.
