Vendors at Pittsburgh Antique Shops in Castle Shannon, as well as other Pittsburgh-area businesses, are gearing up for Small Business Saturday.”There’s always something special for somebody here,” said Michele Rash.Rash, who has been a vendor for more than two years, says she has been preparing nonstop for the annual event.”We clean it. We get it tagged. We get it decorated,” she said. “There’s just a lot of hard work that goes into it, and it is a passion of ours.”Rash says she gets excited at finding items new homes.”When people come in on Small Business Weekend for us, and buy our items, it just gives you a lot of joy to know that someone liked what you liked. Someone purchased what you thought was really special. And then we’re able to put that back into our business,” she said.The shop offers a variety of items, including vases, holiday decorations, lamps, and even a dial-up phone made of marble.”I’ve been doing this since I was 16 years old, so it’s been decades,” said Gina Nitz, who enjoys shopping for antiques as gifts. “It draws you in, and you just never know. It’s like a curiosity shop and an ‘I Spy’ shop all at once. You never know what you’re going to find.”Jessica Vannewkrik, another vendor, talked about the impact of shopping at small businesses.”It just makes such a big difference,” she said. “You see the big box store, they’re excited. But we actually do a happy dance. We’re excited. It makes such a huge difference in our day-to-day lives, and those sales go back into the local community.”Pittsburgh Antique Shops will host an open house on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
