MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – With the holiday shopping season now in full swing, so are efforts to support small businesses. Black Friday deals are here, and shoppers are checking items off their list.

Local businesses also have Black Friday sales and specials, especially for Saturday’s Small Business Saturday. The Owner of Queen City Running says these efforts to bring more customers to shop downtown are greatly appreciated.

“The heart of our community is its downtown, so getting people down here is such a big deal for me; it’s why we chose our location here, we love being part of downtown events and hosting stuff down here,” said Kevin Thomsen, Queen City Running Company Owner. “We’re trying to bring business back to downtown, that’s what I grew up with my grandpa’s store downtown, so it means a lot to me to have people down here shopping and just being a community, being together,” Thomsen said.

Bromley’s Books on Third Street in Marquette is also offering some specials as a way to say thank you to customers supporting local business.

“I think Small Business Saturday gives the community a way to celebrate their local businesses and their shops, and it’s also a way for shops to celebrate the community that supports them as well. It gives us the opportunity to give back to our customers as well. We’ll have a bunch of specials throughout the day, we have free coffee and cookies while people are shopping,” said Chelsea Bromley, Bromley’s Books Owner.

Small Business Saturday began in 2010 as a way to support local businesses. The next year, in 2011, it was officially sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
