Portuguese consumers have now spent around 11 billion euros on online shopping so far in 2025. This is about 1 billion euros more than last year. The estimate comes from the Associação de Economia Digital (AED).

Its president, Alexandre Nilo Fonseca, stated that more people are buying online, not only from local shops but also from stores abroad. He also noted that nearly 20 percent of Portuguese companies now run an online store.

Portugal ecommerce spending

According to the report, the 11 billion euros figure represents the total “Business to Consumer” purchases made by Portuguese consumers, both in national and international online stores. That indicates that the growth in digital commerce is not just about buyers — many businesses are going online too.

‘The biggest progress can be seen in the number of buyers, but also the size of their purchases’

“The biggest progress can be seen in the number of buyers, the size of their purchases, and the sophistication of how people shop online”, said Alexandre Nilo Fonseca, Associação de Economia Digital president.

More than 5 million Portuguese people already shop online, representing 59 percent of the population aged 16 to 74. The most sought-after categories continue to be technology products, especially during promotional periods such as Black Friday.

Legislation protects consumers

As the end of November approaches, the association also warns about risks: with the higher demand, “there are always fake online shops” appearing. Choosing well-known brands and shops with a good reputation is a guarantee. For the AED president, it is also important to “check whether the company has more than just an email address — for example, a phone number, a physical address in Portugal, and a Portuguese tax identification number.” There is a also seal issued by the organization that manages domain names in Portugal, called the “Confio” trust seal, which helps consumers confirm legitimacy.
