At the Target on Elston in Logan Square, holiday shopping is not just about deep discounts, it’s also about the experience.
“The team is ready to bring joy to our guests on Black Friday,” Target Store Director Lauren Wasily said.
Black Friday sales started Sunday with slashed prices on toys, clothes and other items.
Chris Soto says she’s feeling the pinch of inflation and plans to cut back on the toys and buy her great grandkids more of what they need.
“My shopping habits have changed a lot,” Soto said. “I watch what I buy at the grocery store. I watch when I buy clothing and definitely watch what I buy for toys.”
Jennie Bray and her family just moved from Ireland six weeks ago. They are stocking up on both necessities and presents.
“We came to get matching jammies for Christmas which daddy will be delighted about. We’ve got the boys and the girls ones here,” Bray said.

Smaller businesses like Neighborly in Wicker Park hope their unique offerings will be a big draw for shoppers.
“I do like supporting the smaller boutiques. Especially some of them might support smaller artists and what not,” Fatima Osman said.
Neighborly owner Jenny Beorkrem is gearing up for Small Business Saturday.
“For the weekend, we are offering 15% off all locally made goods,” Beorkrem said. “So that supports not only us, but also local businesses making the product.”
Although experts on the economy say consumer confidence this year is shaky, retailers are still hoping for a profitable holiday season.
