November 29, 2025, is Small Business Saturday. This Saturday after Thanksgiving and Black Friday is a day to recognize, celebrate, and shop at the over 36 million independent businesses in communities across the country.
American Express, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, and the city’s Roslindale Village Main Street first launched Small Business Saturday in 2010 and the event has grown significantly since then. In fact, American Express estimates that the total spending in the U.S. by those who shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday was around $22 billion in 2024 and it has generated more $223 billion since it was founded. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has officially cosponsored it since 2011.
Small businesses make up 99.9% of all businesses in America and are the backbone of our communities and of our economy. More than 62 million people, which is almost half of all working Americans, are employed by small businesses. Along with creating jobs and being anchors on Main Streets across America, small businesses bring communities together, solve problems, and help establish cultural identity.
To learn more about how you can support small businesses participating, the SBA has a resource center that you can visit that includes American Express’s list of small businesses that are participating and marketing materials. You can also take the time to support small businesses by simply shopping small and/or using the #ShopSmall on #SmallBizSat hashtags on social media to support and amplify your favorite businesses. Either way, please give some thought to investing in your community and yourself this Saturday.
